5 Simple Writing Strategies:

1. Set aside time every day to write. I know, you’ve heard this time and again but it’s true and it’s important. It keeps you in the habit of writing, makes your copy more interesting, professional, and focused and it ensures that your book doesn’t take ten years to finish.

2. Write conversationally. Not only is conversational writing easier to read, it’s easier to write. Simply imagine that you’re writing to a friend or family member.

3. Write for a specific amount of time, and make it reasonable. Don’t promise that you’re going to write for four hours a day unless you’re already a professional full time writer. It just isn’t reasonable. On the other hand, if you can only write for 15 minutes a day then that’s a reasonable goal. If you end up writing for more than 15 minutes then great but if not, at least you’ve met your goal.

4. Outline or plan your book. Many people groan at the thought of outlining their book. You don’t have to break it down into a 30 page detailed account of what you’re going to write. Simply draft your chapter titles and the points that you want to cover in each chapter. It will make your writing process more efficient, more focused, and more productive.

5. Write when it works best for you. Morning, noon, or night what is the best time for you to focus on your writing? Don’t assume that just because you have more time in the night that that is the best time for you to write. You could be exhausted by the time the 6:00 news rolls around and clear thought just doesn’t happen. If you’re a morning person, write in the morning and vice versa.

5 Simple Editing Strategies:

1. Take editing in stages beginning with a quick spelling and grammar check.

2. Use your software’s search and replace feature to find, and eliminate all passive verbs. Replace them with active, specific verbs. Do your best to reduce or eliminate any unnecessary adverbs (words ending in ly) Instead find specific verbs.

3. Cut all unnecessary, unfocused, copy. If it doesn’t have a specific and clear purpose to you reader, eliminate it.

4. Create transitions between paragraphs and sections. Begin each chapter with a compelling statement and end each chapter with a compelling hook.

5. Do your absolute best to make your book perfect but realize that nothing’s perfect.

5 Simple Publishing Strategies:

1. Self publish your book to make more money and get your book to market as fast as possible.

2. Make your book available in both electronic and print format, to appeal to both markets. (The ebook market is growing every day)

3. Look for a book printer that also offers design, editing, and layout services to make the publishing process fast and easy.

4. Make sure you spend time on your book’s title, table of contents, front and back cover. The book buying decision is made in less than 20 seconds and 90% of that decision comes from your books appearance and cover.

5. Don’t forget to get an ISBN number! (ISBN.org)

5 Simple Marketing Strategies:

1. Make your book available on Amazon.

2. Make sure you have a website to promote your book, reviews, testimonials, relevant articles and information, and even your speaking or appearance calendar.

3. Promote your book in every communication. Email, print, conversation, even your business cards.

4. Carry a copy of your book with you. You never know when someone is going to ask what you do for a living.

5. Write articles for publications and organizations relevant to your book’s topic. Make sure that your bio contains your name, book title, and website.
